Beyond Shopping in Kreuzberg

(more…)

The Berlin Fashion Week Green Guide

Making this guide is doomed to fail. It is not getting easier to filter the  ethical brands from the conventional ones. The jungle of different shades of green continues… and what is good, or good enough? Fair Wear Foundation certification alone? Made-in-Germany? Handcrafted by smiling people? Funky CSR reports or “we do our best”-statements on a website?

We have made a selection of brands and according events that are somehow dedicated to sustainable production. But in the end, every buyer, journalist, agent, or consultant should make their own research, ask critical questions, exchange information among each other, and follow their instincts.

Both Showfloor Berlin and Lavera Showfloor come with an unclear mix of ethical and maybe-not-so-ethical brands. With a selection of wishy-washy brand statements on the Lavera Showfloor site, in my opinion Lavera risks to spoil its credibility as an organic cosmetics brand. One good showfloor with a good selection of ethical brands would actually do it.

The conventional trade shows have a small decrease of ethical brands this summer: as far as I have counted, there are less ethical brands at Bread and Butter, Premium, The Gallery, and no ethical brands at Bright or Panorama Berlin. The ethical brands leaving the conventional shows mainly don’t show in Berlin at all this season.

Meanwhile, Messe Frankfurt claims to present over 100 ethical brands this time at it’s two platforms – Ethical Fashion Show Berlin and Green Showroom. The Ethical fashion Show is said to be fully booked. Maybe it is slowly getting time for the next move – a jump to a shiny new location for both fairs together, showing those over 100 brands in a chic, urban environment. Their exhibitors are increasingly international, but the high fluctuation of exhibitors at both fairs makes clear that the market is still very dynamic but also unstable: many new ethical brands pop up, and many brands leave the stage again, mostly in silence.

The Berlin Fashion Week, with it’s many venues and side-events, keeps up as the most relevant stage for ethical fashion. There is no place one could get a better offer of ethical fashion brands then Berlin. And we’re sure you will find some heartwarming and breathtaking jewels among them.

What’s more? Capsule Berlin is back. Panorama is there. Showfloor Berlin moves back to Kosmos. The Gallery has a new location in the Opern Werkstätten. Bread and Butter has new entrance policies and charges 500 EURO for everyone who is not a 100% buyer or journalist.

Make sure you check out the British Upcycling Showroom and meet the designers Ada Zandition and Orsola De Castro. And we definitely see us at the Green Lounge, organized by Ethical Fashion Show, Green Showroom and Innatex, the central all-together-now party-hot-spot for the ethical fashion scene in Berlin. Be there or be square!

Beyond Fashion Summit 2012: Hypernature

The second edition of the international Beyond Fashion Summit 2012 takes place at the STATION-Berlin on Thursday 15 and Friday 16 November 2012. With the STATION-Berlin, an old postal train station in the middle of Berlin, the Beyond Fashion Summit will find its place at one of the fashion hubs of Berlin, known from the PREMIUM Exhibitions.

The Beyond Fashion Summit 2012 offers a two-day programme with conference, workshops, business talks and a round table. With this year’s theme, HYPERNATURE, the Beyond Fashion Summit is all about innovation in fashion, and the interaction of ecology and new technologies. The conference establishes a visionary discussion on how sustainable and technological inventions can and should change the fashion industry. In what way can new technologies and digital solutions support sustainable production? Is a new vision of sustainability in fashion needed?

Expected are a selection of around 200 professionals from the German and international fashion and textile industry: business representatives, retailers, designers, textile engineers, CSR experts and journalists. The Beyond Fashion Summit offers a high profile environment for business networking and knowledge exchange, and is the ideal place to connect fashion companies stronger to sustainable innovations.

For more information click HERE. The full programme will be published in two weeks. Keep updated and LIKE us on facebook.

We are looking forward seeing you at the Beyond Fashion Summit!

Join the Non Toxic Revolution!

Choose to revolt! Join the NON TOXIC REVOLUTION!

With all the awareness for health and environment and after years of cradle-to-cradle hype I wonder why the topic of toxics is still so small among consumers. This wonderful and provoking campaign by the NGO Keep A Breast just launched in Berlin. The artwork is done by the renown street-artist Stepard Fairey aka Obey the Giant, also known for his genius “HOPE” poster for the Obama Campaign.

The posters already hang in the Berlin streets, at least here in Kreuzberg. On the 5th of July 2012 Strychin Galerie in Berlin-Friedrichshain holds a vernissage where the motives will be sold. Next to that, also the Berlin artists Patrick O’Dell, Seymour, Mimi S., Harry Brack, Christian Rotenhagen, Luisa Catucci and Pisa73 show their interpretations of the images by Fairey. So for those who still find time between all the other events taking place during Berlin Fashion Week, check it out!

One big minus point of the campaign: they forgot the clothing! Would that be because Fairey runs is own, non-organic clothing line Obey Clothing?

See more of the posters at Kalinkakalinka.

Green Guide Berlin Fashion Week July 2012

Berlin Fashion Week starts on Tuesday, the 3rd of July, and you’ll be better prepared! To help you find all the green hotspots, we have sorted out the green brands, showrooms and events in the city.. you will find it underneath.. everything you need to navigate green and glamorous through the days and nights of fashion week. This is just a blog article and not a certification output, so you might still want to talk with the brands about their social and ecological standards before you place your order.

Stay cool, bring your sun cream and rock your Berlin Fashion Week!

The tradeshows – the second edition of the Ethical Fashion Show is showing a serious growth of exhibitors, and together with Green Showroom they are presenting about 100 exhibitors now. Meanwhile we see a further decline of green brands at the Premium, and after the InFashion gave up their Berlin edition, also their platform GreenGlamour has disappeared. Together with the showrooms and the shows we estimate the amount of green fashion brands present during Berlin Fashion Week to be about 140. Kuyichi is not present at Bread&Butter, therefore the promise of a women collection of Knowledge Cotton Apparel might be enough reason to make a visit there anyway.

The showrooms – A showroom highlight this time might be the Austrian Upcycling Showroom, showing more then ten Austrian designers who specialized in upcycling. Also in Mitte: Eco Showroom invites professionals with vegan food and make up sessions, and just around the corner you should check out the new collection of Umasan. Down in the Neukölln ghetto there are Scoop and the opening of the new head quarter and shop of the Berlin label Treches. Don’t forget to chill out with Slowmo in Friedrichshain or visit CUBE showroom in the west. And for your own green fashion shopping: get dressed at the Pop Up Shop at Ethical Fashion Show and the Berlin concept store Wertvoll.

The events – in Berlin you can easily get the feeling that you’re missing something, and this Fashion Week you have to choose wisely. The central green fashion night will be Thursday evening, with the Cotton Summit at the Ethical Fashion Show, the invited-only Innatex Lounge at Das Hotel and later in the evening the debuting Yeswedo! party in the Berlin club Watergate. Then, there’s the Walk of Change by Christoph Harrach, and the Fashion Trendwalk by Eco Showroom. There’s the shows at Lavera Showfloor, the last show by Esther Perbandt is a good reason to party at the After Show Party on Friday.

Call for a Fur Free Fashion Week

anti-fur campaign

Over 100 dutch fashion designers, stylists, fashion magazines, photographers and celebrities have called the direction of the Amsterdam Fashion Week in an open letter to choose for a fur free fashion week. They believe that facilitating fur free shows is a logical choice for innovation, sustainability and animal welfare.

The Amsterdam Fashion Week has a good name to keep up since they host the Green Fashion Competition. In their letter they state that the ambition of sustainability and showing fur on the catwalk are not compatible.

The letter points to an independent research by research agency CE Delft that investigated the environmental impact of fur. Their output: 1 kilo of mink fur is five times more damaging for the climate then 1 kilo of textiles and causes serious environmental damage. Next to the environmental impact there is off course the aspect of animal welfare too. One might get a bit annoyed by the emotional “all those poor animals” campaigns of some animal rights organizations but animal torture is not sexy.

Last year, Oslo Fashion Week was the first worldwide to officially ban fur from the catwalk.

I think it is a good initiative which should be followed by fashion professionals, trade shows and fashion weeks around the globe.

Berlin, are you ready to go fur free?
